What is Pharmacode

Pharmacode does not identify a product for retail. Readers on the packaging line use it to check that the right leaflet, label or folding box went into the pack.

The code consists of narrow and wide bars of fixed widths. Typically a narrow bar is 0.5 mm, a wide bar 1.5 mm and a gap 1 mm, which is what the generator uses by default.

Frequently asked questions

Can a phone scan Pharmacode?

Usually not. Barcode apps and libraries, including the one we test other codes with, do not support it. Dedicated readers on packaging lines read it.

How do you check that the code is correct?

The tests read the bar widths of the drawn code and calculate the value by the Pharmacode rules, independently of the library that draws it.

Which number should I enter?

The one your packaging supplier or quality department assigned. Each kind of packaging usually has its own number.

Which size should I choose?

Whatever the line reader requires. The default 0.5 mm narrow bar and 8 mm height is common, but check the device specification.

Does Pharmacode replace EAN or Data Matrix?

No. Medicine packs usually carry both: Pharmacode for production control and a GS1 code to identify and verify the medicine.
