What is EAN-8
EAN-8 is the short version of EAN-13 for very small products such as cosmetics or sweets. It holds a GTIN-8 number, and the last digit is the check digit.
The nominal size uses X = 0.33 mm: 22.11 mm wide including quiet zones and 18.23 mm bar height. Like EAN-13 it can be scaled from 80% to 200%.
Frequently asked questions
When should I use EAN-8 instead of EAN-13?
Only when an EAN-13 really does not fit on the package, even at a reduced size. GTIN-8 numbers are allocated one by one, so they cannot be created from a company prefix like EAN-13 numbers.
Where do I get an EAN-8 number?
GTIN-8 numbers are allocated by GS1 (in Poland: GS1 Polska) on request. Qreska does not issue numbers; it only draws the code from a number you already have.
Can I turn an EAN-13 into an EAN-8?
No. They are two different numbers, not a short form of the same number. EAN-8 needs its own GTIN-8.
What quiet zone is needed?
At least 7 modules of blank space on each side of the code. At X = 0.33 mm that is about 2.3 mm.
Can a phone scan EAN-8?
Yes. Tills, warehouse scanners and most phone apps read EAN-8 just like EAN-13.
