Interleaved 2 of 5 generator

A compact barcode for digits only, written in pairs. Used on cartons, in warehouses and in industry.

Code settings

Enter at least 6 digits. With an odd count we add a 0 in front.

The narrowest bar of the code. Recommended 0.19 to 1.016 mm.

From 3 to 300 mm.

Blank margin around the code required by the standard. Keep it on.

Appearance

The human readable digits or characters, set in OCR-B.

Height of a digit, from 1 to 30 mm.

Hexadecimal, for example #000000.

Fills the quiet zone too.

Preview

Size with quiet zone: 25.58 × 17.43 mm. The on-screen preview is enlarged.

PNG file: 310 × 211 px, 307.9 DPI. Each module gets whole pixels and the DPI is set so the printout has exactly the size in mm shown above.

What is Interleaved 2 of 5

Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF) writes digits in pairs: one digit in the bars, the next in the spaces between them. This keeps the code short, but the number of digits must be even.

ITF has no built-in length check, so a scanner can read only part of the code. Systems therefore usually fix the code length, and GS1 marking uses ITF-14.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the generator add a zero?

The code writes digits in pairs, so their count must be even. A leading zero does not change the value of the number, but it changes the text a scanner reads.

Why at least 6 digits?

Very short ITF codes are easy to confuse with part of another code, so many scanners, including the library we test codes with, ignore them.

How is ITF different from ITF-14?

ITF-14 is Interleaved 2 of 5 with a fixed length of 14 digits, a GTIN-14 and a frame. Plain ITF has any even length and is for internal marking.

What wide-to-narrow ratio is used?

The generator draws wide elements 2.5 times wider than narrow ones. The standard allows 2 to 3.

Which module width should I choose?

Typically 0.25 to 0.5 mm on labels and up to 1 mm on board. Leave a quiet zone of at least 10 modules on each side.
