What is GS1 DataMatrix
GS1 DataMatrix starts with the FNC1 character and writes data using GS1 application identifiers, like GS1-128. It holds more data on a much smaller area, though.
Medicine packs in the EU carry a 2D code with the product code, serial number, batch and expiry date. The generator checks the format of every value, check digits and dates.
Frequently asked questions
Which data should go on a medicine pack?
Usually the GTIN (01), expiry date (17), batch (10) and serial number (21). The details come from regulations and the medicine verification system, so check them with your regulatory team.
How is it different from plain Data Matrix?
By the FNC1 character at the start and the GS1 data structure. The scanner thus knows the data is GS1 and can split it into fields.
Which module size should I choose?
For Data Matrix on healthcare products GS1 recommends a module of 0.255 to 0.615 mm. The generator defaults to 0.4 mm.
Does the order of fields matter?
A scanner reads any order. Fixed-length fields such as (01) and (17) are best placed before variable-length ones such as (10) and (21).
Where do I get a GTIN?
GTINs are issued by GS1 (in Poland: GS1 Polska). Qreska does not issue numbers; it only draws the code.
