Aztec generator

A 2D code with a bullseye in the middle, common on rail and airline tickets on phones. It needs no blank margin.

Code settings

Any text, up to 1500 bytes.

The side of one square (module) of the code. Recommended 0.25 to 1 mm.

Blank margin around the code required by the standard. Keep it on.

Share of the code used for error correction. A higher level gives a bigger code.

Appearance

Hexadecimal, for example #000000.

Fills the quiet zone too.

Preview

Size with quiet zone: 6.93 × 6.93 mm. The on-screen preview is enlarged.

Download the code

PNG file: 84 × 84 px, 307.9 DPI. Each module gets whole pixels and the DPI is set so the printout has exactly the size in mm shown above.

What is Aztec

Aztec has a bullseye pattern in the middle that scanners use to find the code. It therefore needs no quiet zone and reads well from a phone screen.

The error correction level is the share of the symbol used for correction. The standard recommends 23%; a higher level adds robustness and size.

Frequently asked questions

Where is Aztec used?

Mainly on tickets: rail tickets, airline boarding passes and public transport tickets, especially shown on a phone.

Does Aztec need a margin?

It needs no quiet zone, but the generator leaves one module of space so the code does not blend into its surroundings.

Can a phone read Aztec?

Most barcode apps read it, but not every built-in camera.

Which error correction level should I choose?

The recommended 23% is enough for codes shown on a screen. Choose a higher level for printed codes that may get damaged.

Aztec or QR?

For tickets and uses where a carrier requires it, choose Aztec. For links and content for customers, QR, which everyone knows, is usually better.
