What is Wi-Fi QR code
A Wi-Fi QR code holds the network name, the security type and the password in an agreed format. A phone offers to join with one tap, so nobody copies a password off a card. It is the usual choice for cafés, offices, surgeries and rented flats.
Remember the password is stored in the clear. Anyone who scans the print learns it. For guests, a separate guest network kept apart from company equipment is the right answer.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Wi-Fi QR code work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, both read this format with the built-in camera. On iPhone since iOS 11, on Android since version 10 without an extra app, and before that through the manufacturer's camera app.
Is the password encrypted in the code?
No. The Wi-Fi format stores it in the clear and anyone who scans the code can see it. Do not post a code for your company network in a public place; put up a separate guest network instead.
What do I pick for WPA2 or WPA3?
Choose WPA. One value in this format covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3, and the phone picks the right variant when connecting.
My network name contains a semicolon or a colon. Is that a problem?
No. Those characters are meaningful in the Wi-Fi format, so we escape them with a backslash. A network called "Cafe;Bar" is therefore read in full rather than truncated at the semicolon.
Why will my phone not join my hidden network?
Tick "Hidden network". Without it the phone looks for the name among broadcast networks and does not find it. Check the name is typed exactly, capitalisation included.
