QR code generator for an email address

A QR code that opens a new message with the address, subject and body filled in.

Static code

The content is stored inside the code for good. Once printed it cannot be changed; you have to generate a new code. Dynamic codes, whose target can be swapped later, are planned for the next stage.

Code settings

The address the message goes to.

Optional. Filled into the subject line.

Optional. A starting text the sender can change.

The side of one square (module) of the code. Recommended 0.25 to 2 mm.

How much of the code can be damaged or covered without losing data. A higher level gives a bigger code.

Blank margin around the code required by the standard. Keep it on.

Decoration

The finder patterns in the three corners stay square whatever you pick, because a scanner starts from them.

PNG, JPG, SVG or WebP, up to 512 kB. The file stays in your browser and is never uploaded. Adding a logo raises the error correction to its highest level.

Appearance

Hexadecimal, for example #000000.

Fills the quiet zone too.

Preview

Size with quiet zone: 20.5 × 20.5 mm. The on-screen preview is enlarged.

PNG file: 246 × 246 px, 304.8 DPI. Each module gets whole pixels and the DPI is set so the printout has exactly the size in mm shown above.

What is Email QR code

An email QR code opens the mail app with a message ready: the recipient filled in, and the subject and body too if you want. The sender only adds their own words and sends.

A prefilled subject helps enormously with sorting the post. A code on a leaflet with the subject "Trade fair enquiry" or "Complaint" tells you where the message came from without asking the customer.

Frequently asked questions

Are the subject and body required?

No, the address alone is enough. The code then opens an empty message addressed to it.

Will accented characters in the subject survive?

Yes. The subject and body are percent-encoded as UTF-8, so accents, spaces and characters such as the ampersand reach the mail app intact.

Will the code send the message by itself?

No, and it cannot. The code only opens a prepared message; sending always needs the phone owner to confirm.

Which mail app opens?

Whichever is set as the default handler for mailto addresses. If no account is set up, the phone offers to add one first.

Can I put in several recipients?

This field takes one address. Mail apps vary in how they handle several, so for reliability we keep it to one.
