QR code generator for plain text

Store any text in a QR code. Scanning it shows the text on the phone.

Static code

The content is stored inside the code for good. Once printed it cannot be changed; you have to generate a new code. Dynamic codes, whose target can be swapped later, are planned for the next stage.

Code settings

Any text, accented characters included. It is shown after scanning.

The side of one square (module) of the code. Recommended 0.25 to 2 mm.

How much of the code can be damaged or covered without losing data. A higher level gives a bigger code.

Blank margin around the code required by the standard. Keep it on.

Decoration

The finder patterns in the three corners stay square whatever you pick, because a scanner starts from them.

PNG, JPG, SVG or WebP, up to 512 kB. The file stays in your browser and is never uploaded. Adding a logo raises the error correction to its highest level.

Appearance

Hexadecimal, for example #000000.

Fills the quiet zone too.

Preview

Size with quiet zone: 18.5 × 18.5 mm. The on-screen preview is enlarged.

PNG file: 222 × 222 px, 304.8 DPI. Each module gets whole pixels and the DPI is set so the printout has exactly the size in mm shown above.

What is Text QR code

A text QR code simply displays what it holds. It suits anything with no action attached: a serial number, a one-line instruction, an inventory number, a warehouse aisle code or the safe code in a hotel room.

Text is stored as UTF-8 and phone readers handle it correctly. Keep in mind that an accented character takes two bytes rather than one, so text with accents fits in fewer characters than plain ASCII.

Frequently asked questions

How much text fits in a QR code?

At the usual error correction level the largest QR code holds about 2300 bytes. For unaccented text that is roughly the same number of characters, for accented text correspondingly fewer. More content means a denser code and a harder scan.

Do accented characters work?

Yes. The text is stored as UTF-8, which readers on Android and iOS recognise. If you need certainty with a very old industrial scanner, plain ASCII is the safer choice.

Can I store several lines?

Yes, a line break in the field is stored and the text shows on several lines after scanning.

Why is my code so dense?

Density grows with the length of the text and with the error correction level. If the code will be printed small, shorten the text or drop the error correction from M to L.

Is the text stored anywhere?

No. The code is drawn in your browser; the content is not sent to our server or saved anywhere.
